Did you celebrate National Public Lands Day by getting outside?

I actually traveled out of the country to Canada’s public lands with my Mom and Wander! We enjoyed seeing the trees at peak fall foliage on the drive to and from Mount Carleton Provincial Park.
Mount Carleton is the highest mountain in the province of New Brunswick and only two hours from us. We’ve hiked it before, but we took a different trail up this time with lots of rock scrambling and a gradual trail down to make a clockwise, six-mile loop. On the way up, we were warned about a ground nest of hornets and tried to avoid them, but the trail wasn’t very wide and I got stung on my right calf. At least my Mom and Wander were able to avoid the hornets!
We had a great day overall with warm fall temperatures and clear views of the foliage surrounding the mountain. The trail up and across the ridge to the fire tower was my favorite part. Have you hiked Mount Carleton or been to the park?

Today is the 10th(!) anniversary of my 2,185.3-mile Appalachian Trail thru-hike finish!

My Appalachian Trail solo thru-hike was the adventure of a lifetime! Hiking over 2,000 miles challenged and changed me forever. On my 5 month, 11 day thru-hike through 14 states, I averaged 13.1 miles per day with my highest mileage day at 31.4 miles. I got a new backpack, sleeping bag, and 4 pairs of hiking shoes along the journey. I even earned a new (trail) name - Homestretch!
Thru-hiking is all about the adventure in the journey, and what an adventure I had! The resilience and grit you gain makes you realize you can do just about anything. It’s a feeling of accomplishment that never leaves you. I feel so grateful for those who supported me, encouraged me, and hiked parts of the trail with me, especially my family. I may have hiked the trail solo, but I was never truly alone in reaching my goal.
My thru-hiking adventure will forever be a part of me and I still think about the trail every day. Hiking my own hike through life has led me to determine when people call you crazy, you are on the right path to living your life your own way. It’s only crazy until you do it. No matter what anyone else does or says, you have to hike your own hike through life because you’ll be the one facing the consequences. Take the risk because the biggest risk is regret. It’s okay to live a life others do not understand. Sometimes in life the road less traveled leads to the most joy anyway. Choose that road, every time. All we get is time and choices - be wise with both and use yours to go after your dreams and bucket lists!

We’ve accomplished so much, but the best part has been doing it all together. They say a dog will change your life. Wander has certainly changed mine with her unconditional love, enthusiasm for everything water- or mud-related, and adventurous spirit.

Flying over the Great Barrier Reef was unbelievable and the whole experience felt like a dream! The fact I was in Australia experiencing a bucket list trip, the stunning colors of the ocean, and the magical feeling of floating over one of the world’s natural wonders added to the dreamlike quality of my flight over the Great Barrier Reef. It’s not a trip I’ll soon forget!

When life feels like a dream

Flying over the Great Barrier Reef was even more amazing than I pictured. The colors are so vivid! My favorite color is teal, so as you can imagine, I was (literally) in heaven seeing all the blues, greens and teals of the ocean around the islands and the Great Barrier Reef. It has to be one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen!
